Meet Redford Branch Library friend...Rahsaan Abdullah

I am a licensed Master Electrician. My skills as an electrician cover a 35 year span of my life. I am a percussionist, pianist and herbalist. I can say that my greatest passion inwardly, is good music. I’m also the committee chairperson for the Grandmont Community Association Street/Block Captains. I believe we have to be very passionate about our community so I’m very involved. Yes, I do want to do all I can to be of service to my community.

I am an independent distributor for Pureherbs.com. I have a wealth of information about herbs and how to use them. If you would like more information on pureherbs.com feel free to contact me by email at rhsna2@yahoo.com

My vision for the Redford Branch Library is for it to be the model library for community ties. A place to link ideas and information to share, thus, uplifting both families and our community spirit. The world is in transformation, and it will be more difficult for those who don't make new connections. We have great potential, let's just do what it takes.

HOW DOES YOUR GARDEN GROW ??

by Andrel "Faye" Hughes
Master Gardener

Hello Gardener Friends:
One cheery thought during this "wintry March", each day that passes brings us one day closer to SPRING! Spring begins officially on March 20th.
Now what should we be doing to prepare for this event? You might want to gather all of your flower pots from last year and wash them in a solution of:

· 1 part white vinegar,
· 1 part bleach,
· 1 part water (use your basement wash basin for this operation).

This will eliminate any overwintering fungus or disease that could harm your new plants. Give some serious thought about how you want your garden to look, and what flowers/vegetables/herbs you would like to grow. (Day Dream a little, it's good for the soul). Next, order some "FREE” Garden /Seed Catalogs. My favorites are:

· Johnny's Select Seeds 1-877-564-6697 http://www.johnnysselectseed.com/
· Gardeners Supply 1-866-245-4359 http://www.gardeners.com/
· Stark Bro's 1-800-325-4180 http://www.starkbros.com/

These gems are sure to take you to another place, with their beautiful illustrations, helpful hints, and growing information from seed to harvest. Johnny's catalog gives the most detailed information. Keep in mind Michigan's growing Zone is 5.
If you just can't wait for the ground to thaw to start "playing in the dirt", how about starting some of your plants indoors from seeds? Starting seeds indoors enables you to begin the new season earlier. You'll have more control over the environment, so seeds will germinate faster and seedlings will grow vigorously. Check the seed packet; it will indicate the number of weeks needed to germinate. Then, mark your calendar on the date of the last "frost" expected (May 12th is the official "frost free" date) and count backwards from that date to know the number of weeks needed to sow seeds indoors.

Here is a short list of plants to begin with right now:

· Broccoli
· Swiss Chard
· Spinach
· Cabbage

All of these "hardy" plants can be transplanted outdoors on May 12th.

Love and Peace…Andrel
