Happy Mother's Day
"Happy Mother's Day" means more
Than have a happy day.
Within those words lie lots of things
We never get to say.
It means I love you first of all,
Then thanks for all you do.
It means you mean a lot to me,
And that I honor you.
But most of all, I guess it means
That I am thinking of
Your happiness on this, your day,
With pleasure and with love.

Celebrating Cinco de Mayo
The Mexican holiday (which means fifth of May in Spanish) commemorates a Mexican victory against French forces in the city of Puebla nearly 150 years ago. Though the day has little significance in Mexico, Mexican Americans for years have viewed Cinco de Mayo as a way to express pride in their heritage.
There’s no shortage of Mexican pride in Michigan, and the parade is much more than a tradition in the southwest Detroit neighborhood. Vernor Avenue (between Dix and Clark streets) will turn into a veritable fiesta as people gather along the 3.1-mile parade route.
“It’s a large parade. It’s a neighborhood thing, but people come from everywhere to see it,” says Vittoria Katanski, marketing director of the Southwest Detroit Business Association.
The parade will stretch from Patton Park to Clark Park. Bands, artists and marchers will make the trek down Vernor. In the past, the parade has featured a wide range of attractions, everything from Mexican folk dancers to low-rider cars to tricked-out bikes.
Businesses along the way will have sales and refreshments to entice visitors. More than 250 businesses are part of the West Vernor and Springwells Business Improvement District, which will beautify the route before and after the event.
