This month's book selection is The Last Lecture, by Randy Pausch.
On September 18, 2007, computer science professor Randy Pausch stepped in front of an audience of 400 people at Carnegie Mellon University to deliver a last lecture called “Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams.” With slides of his CT scans beaming out to the audience, Randy told his audience about the cancer that is devouring his pancreas and that will claim his life in a matter of months. On the stage that day, Randy was youthful, energetic, handsome, often cheerfully, darkly funny. He seemed invincible. But this was a brief moment, as he himself acknowledged.
Randy’s lecture has become a phenomenon, as has the book he wrote based on the same principles, celebrating the dreams we all strive to make realities. Sadly, Randy lost his battle to pancreatic cancer on July 25th, 2008, but his legacy will continue to inspire us all, for generations to come.
The information above was taken from the website http://www.thelastlecture.com/

Stop by the reference desk and pick up your copy of the book and join in the discussion.

It’s Hard Out Here For A Poet
Kamamu D. Abubakari
by Kamamu D. Abubakari

You are a shining star
But you aren’t glistening

You're writing and reading your poetry
But who is listening
You aren’t making any money
Don’t have a pot to piss in
It’s hard out here for a poet
Folks like what you have to say
But they aren’t buying
Some people say you ought to give it up
But you keep in trying
Sometimes poets laugh out loud
When they are silently crying
It’s hard out here for a poet

Your books and your CDs
They are not selling too well
You rapin’ but you aren’t reaping
As your bank account can tell
The art of poetry and the business of the art
They don’t seem to gel
It’s hard out here for a poet

So, you go on working your craft
Working at your art
Your commitment is in your head
As well as in your heart
You know you must always finish
The poems that you start
It’s hard out here for a poet

Poets are not concerned with the cares and woes
Of unprincipled pimps and misguided whores
They’re going to have to save their own
God-d----- souls
It’s hard out here for a poet

One day the poets are going to be truly appreciated
While speaking their special truths
Can sometimes be complicated
The poet’s influence can never be negated
It’s hard out here for a poet

Are you a poet?  Would you like to see your creativity on our blog?  Send an email to the Cyber Librarian friendsofrbl@gmail.com

You could be the next featured artist on our blog.
