Where Are the Children?
Nancy Harmon long ago fled the heartbreak of her first marriage, the macabre deaths of her two little children, and the shocking charges against her. She changed her name, dyed her hair, and left California for the windswept peace of Cape Cod. Now remarried, she has two more beloved children, and the terrible pain has begun to heal -- until the morning when she looks in the backyard for her little boy and girl and finds only one red mitten. She knows that the nightmare is beginning again....

PARENT'S LITERACY TIP CORNER
Share numbers with your kids. It's many adults' guilty secret that they learn as much from reading children's books as their kids do. How Much Is A Million? and On Beyond A Million, both by David M. Schwartz, are good resources for conceptualizing big numbers. Another great pair of books is Family Math and Family Math For Young Children, full of math puzzles and games to do with your kids. Lastly, why tell only stories at night? Give your kids a bedtime math problem as well; read more about that here.

Say No to Soda Pop for the Month of November
Did you know soda pop is the No. 1 source of added sugar and extra calories in the American diet?
According to research:
- One 20-ounce bottle has 17-19 teaspoons of sugar.
- Artificial sweeteners found in diet pop, like aspartame, increase sugar cravings that lead to ingesting other sugar-laden foods.
- Adults who drink one or more sodas or other sugar-sweetened beverages each day are 27% more likely to be overweight or obese.
Both regular and diet soda drinks are, at minimum, responsible for weight-control issues and diseases such as obesity, diabetes and cancer. The evidence is overwhelming that soda pop causes significant harm to our bodies, yet soda pop drinkers really don't understand to what extent.
- Soda pop contains phosphoric acid, which weakens bones
and rots teeth.
- The aluminum cans contain an epoxy resin called
Bisphenol A (BPA), which keeps the soda acid from reacting with the metal.
BPA has been linked to infertility, obesity, diabetes and some
reproductive cancers.
- The dyes in the soda have been linked to impaired brain
function, hyperactive behavior, difficulty focusing and lack of impulse
control.
- Potassium benzoate is a preservative that can be broken
down to benzene in your body. When exposed to the sun, for example, your
soda becomes a carcinogen.
Watch the unhappy truth about soda!

Description
The Charles H. Wright Museum's Monthly Community Cinema series is proud to present a screening and discussion of Solar Mamas.
Welcome to India’s Barefoot College, where rural, poor, and often illiterate women from around the world are offered the rare opportunity to receive an education that teaches them how to make their communities self-reliant and sustainable. Rafea, a beautiful, strong-willed 32-year-old Jordanian mother of four, is traveling outside of her village for the first time ever to attend Barefoot’s solar engineering program. Once there, she will join women from Guatemala, Kenya, Burkina Faso, and Colombia in a life-changing, six-month job training program that will transform her into a solar engineer — and change her life.
