What's Happening in August at DPL's Redford Branch Library

Library News and Information

Dr Wright Gets In The SOUP, And Brings The Bacon To RBL!

The inaugural Grandmont Rosedale SOUP event far exceeded expectations this past Sunday, July 21st.   Just over 150 people came out to support and vote for the community development project of their choice.  The crowd heard compelling proposals from four presenters seeking to fund projects, but the night’s winner was Dr. Conja Wright from the Redford Branch of the Detroit Public Library. Her proposal for Meditation and Reading Park was awarded $1,183.75 by the community! The project includes the development of a strip of land adjacent to the Redford Branch Library as an area to sit, read and/or meditate.

The next Grandmont Rosedale SOUP will be held in October. Dr. Wright will be in attendance to update the community on the progress of the Meditation and Reading Park Project. Start thinking about proposals now, the application process for Grandmont Rosedale SOUP will open again in September.

Thanks to all who showed up in support of the community. A special thanks to the Grandmont Rosedale SOUP committee – Amanda Brewington, Sarah Craft, Razi Jafri, Kevin Johnson, Becki Kenderes, Blake Maurice, Tom Ridgway, Sean VandenBrink and Liz Wroughton, muralist Susan VandenBrink and volunteers who helped paint. Also thanks to the generous cooks who provided soup or salad for the night – Karen Moore, Chris Ridgway, Phil Schloop, Darlene Taylor, Liz Wroughton  and Kenneth Wolfe.

Dana, a modern black woman, is celebrating her twenty-sixth birthday with her new husband when she is snatched abruptly from her home in California and transported to the antebellum South. Rufus, the white son of a plantation owner, is drowning, and Dana has been summoned to save him. Dana is drawn back repeatedly through time to the slave quarters, and each time the stay grows longer, more arduous, and more dangerous until it is uncertain whether or not Dana's life will end, long before it has a chance to begin.  Adults

  1. Thank you for sharing. I enjoy reading about the various events at the Redford Branch Library and I share with others. Sandy's Land Publishing and Entertainment would be a great fit for the Redford Branch Library. To find out more visit www.girlpowerbook.eventbrite.com or http://sandyslandtips.blogspot.com/2013/01/face-painting-samples-by-ms-sandy.html

I would love to do a booksigning this fall 2013.

    Keep up the great work!
